Surgical Treatments

The position of the lower jaw in relation to the upper jaw is a vital factor in achieving an ideal orthodontic treatment result.

Surgical treatments are for our patients that have severe skeletal discrepancies. The position of the lower jaw in relation to the upper jaw can make a difference to the result in the bite, overall functionality and facial appearance. The position of the jaws is a vital factor in surgical cases when striving to achieve an ideal orthodontic treatment result.

Options for surgical treatment include:

Chin Advancement (Genioplasty)

Chin Advancement (Genioplasty) is jaw surgery to improve the underlying position of the upper and lower jaws relative to each other. Surgery not only corrects the skeletal structures but it can improve the facial profile. If the discrepancy between the upper and lower jaw is too large a chin implant may also be needed to improve facial profile.

Class III Maxillary Advancement and Mandibular Set Back

Class III Maxillary Advancement and Mandibular Set Back is surgery to correct a Class III malocclusion which may involve advancement of the maxilla (upper jaw) and set back of the mandible (lower jaw). The upper jaw is often deficient in Class III cases and moving this structure forward enables for improvement of the mid-face (cheek bone measurement).

Maxillary Impaction (Gummy smile)

Maxillary Impaction (Gummy smile) is jaw surgery to reduce the amount of gum showin

Surgically Assisted Maxillary Expansion (S.A.M.E)

Surgically Assisted Maxillary Expansion (S.A.M.E) is surgical expansion required to widen the upper jaw once growth has ceased.

Class II Mandibular Advancement Surgery

Class II Mandibular Advancement Surgery is jaw surgery to improve the underlying position of the upper and lower jaws relative to each other. Surgery not only corrects the skeletal structures but it can improve the facial profile. Combined jaw surgery and orthodontic treatment enables the attainment of the ideal facial harmony and correction of the bite

To assist in achieving an ideal result, orthognathic surgery may be required if it is deemed necessary by our specialist orthodontists and if the patient is interested.
