Straight talk about Invisalign for adults

Are you sick of living with crooked teeth but aren’t sure if you’ve left it too late? Here’s all you need to know about Invisalign for adults.

When is the best time to straighten teeth?

You may be aware that most orthodontists recommend straightening teeth in the teen years. Perhaps you have children who are getting braces, or you’ve simply seen teens with braces around the place. The reason this happens is because teeth are not fully set in place until the age of 20. If we apply braces or Invisalign to teeth before they are fully set in place, it is generally a more efficient straightening process.

However, it is important to understand that this does not mean we discourage adults to straighten their teeth. Adult teeth are still able to be moved using braces or Invisalign. It may take a little longer than it would in the teen years, but this shouldn’t be a deterrent to achieving the straight smile you have always wanted.

Why choose Invisalign

We often recommend Invisalign for our adult patients as it is an extremely discreet and comfortable straightening method. Invisalign trays are made from a clear medical grade plastic that fit over the arch of your teeth. This means no bulky metal and no uncomfortable comments from friends and acquaintances.

Another major advantage of Invisalign for adult patients is the fact that the trays are removable. Removable trays mean patients are able to brush and floss teeth as normal, maintaining a high oral hygiene level throughout the entire straightening process. This also allows patients the flexibility to remove their aligners for special events that may arise within the treatment timeframe, so they feel completely like themselves.

Choosing an Invisalign provider

These days, most dentists offer Invisalign or some form of orthodontic system. While you may like the idea of not having to switch between practices, dentists often do not have extensive experience or broader understanding of orthodontic work compared to orthodontists. At South East Orthodontics, we are confident that our extra years of study and experience will mean a better treatment for you. We understand the complexities of the mouth and have a thorough understanding of all orthodontic treatment, allowing us to offer the best treatment for your situation.

Is Invisalign right for me?

Invisalign relies on the compliance of the patient. As the aligners are removable, some patients find it hard to remember to wear them or choose only to wear them at certain times. While taking them off for a special event is one of the draw cards of this type of treatment, leaving them off for extended periods of time will limit the effectiveness. It is recommended to wear the aligners approximately 22 hours a day to ensure results.

Invisalign has helped thousands of patients around the world achieve the cosmetic results they were looking for. However, you may require structural treatment too which may not be able to be treated using the Invisalign system. Severe crowding, problems with your bite and teeth that need pulling down or moving across will need a more adaptable treatment such as traditional braces. The best way to know for sure is to come in for an assessment with South East Orthodontics. We will be able to offer you the best advice on treatment and help you to make the right decision for you.
